FAA Reauthorization Update

Shortly before the FAA’s current authorization lapsed, Congress approved a six-month extension of the agency until March 31, 2016. Lawmakers gave themselves this additional time to address higher priority issues including a budget deal, raising the nation’s debt ceiling, and a long-term highway funding bill. Those issues are in the process of being closed out and that means the FAA reauthorization will soon be front and center. We expect the central issue of the upcoming FAA reauthorization debate, ATC reform, to resume in a much more public manner. To read more about the FAA reauthorization and NATA's efforts, click below.

Remembering Gwen Mayo, First Woman Chairperson of NATA

NATA was saddened to learn of the passing of long-time NATA member and industry leader Gwendolyn “Gwen” Lee Olson Mayo. Gwen founded and led Mayo Aviation, a prominent Denver Part 135 charter operator and 36-year dedicated partner with Flight for Life Colorado. A pioneer in the charter aviation industry, Mayo was inducted into the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame; served as the first female chairperson of the National Air Transportation Association (NATA); and received NATA’s William A. “Bill” Ong Memorial Award and the National Business Aviation Association’s Silk Scarf Award. 

 


FAA Extends Comment Period for 14 CFR Part 147 Proposed Update

Last week, the FAA extended the comment period for the notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) related to the agency's proposed update to 14 CFR Part 147. The action comes after NATA joined with other aviation and education industry groups last month to request an extension. The group requested more time to consider and analyze the NPRM in order to help the agency produce an effective final rule.

NATA Participates in Consistency of Regulatory Interpretation (CRI) Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) Meeting

Earlier this month, NATA and industry received an update from the FAA on the implementation of CRI ARC recommendations. The FAA discussed activities to improve the consistency of regulatory interpretations within the FAA’s Flight Standards Service (AFS) and Aircraft Certification Service (AIR). Of the six recommendations the CRI ARC developed, three of those recommendations have since been closed out.

FAA Issues Notice in Response to NATA and Industry MAG Rev 5 Concerns

 

On November 17th, the FAA issued a notice in response to a letter signed by NATA along with a coalition of aviation trade associations recommending the FAA consider aligning the implementation of the MAG. The notice delays implementation of the FAA Form 8130-3 requirement until April 1, 2016.

Aircraft Technical Publishers (ATP) recently announced the release of two new products: ATP Tool Compliance Manager and ATP Employee Compliance Manager. Fargo Jet Center, Sister Company Selects New President

 

NATA member Fargo Jet Center recently named Neil Brackin as President of its sister company, Weather Modification, Inc. Brackin, who rejoined the team in 2014 as Vice President of Flight Operations at Fargo Jet Center, will continue to build on the foundation of WMI’s position as a global leader in modern atmospheric research and cloud seeding as well as new business development in emerging technologies. NATA's 2016 Aviation Business Conference will take place June 8th-10th at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. The conference will kick off with a reception Wednesday evening, June 8th and the conference will conclude Friday afternoon, June 10th.
