President-Elect Donald Trump

Nominates Elaine Chao To Lead the
Department of Transportation

Last Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump announced his intent to nominate Elaine Chao to serve as Secretary of Transportation. Chao has previously served as Secretary of Labor and held the position of Deputy Secretary of Transportation in the administration of President George H.W. Bush. NATA President Marty Hiller praised the choice stating, “NATA congratulates Secretary Elaine Chao on her selection by President-elect Trump as our next Secretary of Transportation. Secretary Chao is a serious, substantive choice to head a department that is critical to the economic success of our nation. In the coming days, we will all be looking to the Department of Transportation to lead the discussions about the best way to invest in our nation’s infrastructure, including our airports and modernizing our air traffic control system. Secretary Chao’s familiarity with the Department – and the bigger picture that drives debates about transportation policy – will be critical to moving our nation forward. Aviation businesses are excited to work with Secretary Chao and her team and we thank President-elect Trump for his excellent choice.”

NATA Hosts General Aviation Joint Steering Committee Safety Analysis Team (GAJSC SAT) Meeting

Last week, NATA hosted the General Aviation Joint Steering Committee Safety Analysis Team (GAJSC SAT) meeting at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. Committee members, comprised of industry and government representatives, received a safety data update from the FAA’s Office of Accident Investigation & Prevention (AVP) and an implementation update on the status of several Safety Enhancements (SEs) pertaining to System Component Failure – PowerPlant (SCF-PP) and Loss of Control (LOC). The FAA also provided an update on the agency’s Aviation Data Exchange (AVDEX) system project. The purpose of the AVDEX system is to allow repair stations, pilots, mechanics, and operators share and report information and problems with one another. The system will generate and provide improved quality data. The meeting concluded with a discussion on the GA metric and potential future projects. The GAJSC SAT will meet in early 2017.
