NATA Highlights Negative Effects of Government Shutdown on Industry – Share Your Stories

As the shutdown of the federal government enters its fourth week, NATA released a Member Alert highlighting the toll the shutdown is having on the aviation industry. From furloughed TSA workers and air traffic controllers forced to work without pay, to the inability for member companies to receive permissions and permits from the FAA, the aviation community is feeling the effects of a closed government. The alert highlighted examples of companies who are not able to perform the basic duties that help them operate, including a company and its client who cannot gain the permits needed to transport surgeons and organs in a timely manner, preventing them from saving lives. NATA legislative and regulatory staff are on hand to answer questions and document stories during the shutdown.

Civic, Aviation Leaders Showcase Viability of Alternative Jet Fuels In Live Demo

On January 17th, a coalition of international business aviation organizations joined Los Angeles-area civic leaders and 130+ industry guests to mark a milestone in the initiative to promote the development and adoption of sustainable alternative jet fuels (SAJF) through Business Jets Fuel Green: A Step Toward Sustainability.


“Today’s ground-breaking event demonstrates that National Air Transportation Association (NATA) members across the supply chain—from fuel suppliers and distributors to aircraft owners and operators—are committed to a future of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel,” stated NATA President Gary Dempsey. “Van Nuys Airport was the perfect backdrop for today’s activities, and we appreciate the support of the Van Nuys Airport Association, Los Angeles World Airports and the other coalition members in making ‘Business Jets Fuel Green: A Step Toward Sustainability’ a reality. We look forward to continuing to spread the message of the impact and benefits of SAJF throughout the industry and across the world.”

NATA Remembers IBAC's Michael W. Hohm 

On January 15th, the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) announced the passing of Michael W. Hohm.

 

As IBAC Director for Liaison to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Michael played a key role as the business aviation industry representative on the Air Navigation Commission (ANC) at ICAO and was responsible for day-to-day relationships with the ICAO Secretariat and national delegations to ICAO.    

 

“Michael was a tremendous advocate for our industry and a dear colleague to all of us at IBAC and to all our Member Associations,” commented Kurt Edwards, IBAC Director General.  “He will be missed dearly, especially for his sincere dedication and passion for aviation, and his kindness that fostered so many relationships throughout the industry during his career.”

FAA Releases Proposal that Would Allow Drones to be Flown Over People and at Night

 

Despite the government shutdown, last week the FAA released a much anticipated proposed rule that would allow small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to be flown commercially over people and at night without obtaining a waiver. The FAA notes how the rulemaking “would also require remote pilots in command to present their remote pilot in command certificate as well as identification to certain federal, state, or local officials, upon request, and proposes to amend the knowledge testing requirements in the rules that apply to small UAS operations to require training every 24 calendar months.” For an operator to fly at night, they must complete knowledge testing or training, which includes new information on operating at night, and the small UAS must have an anti-collision light visible for at least 3 statute miles. To fly a small UAS over people, the FAA proposes three categories “based on the risk of injury they present.” The FAA is not currently seeking comments and the information in the proposal will be posted to the Federal Register later.

Global Airways Set to Open New FBO at Cardiff International Airport

 

Global Trek Aviation, previously established at Belfast International (EGAA), they are expanding their brand by opening a second Executive Jet Centre at Cardiff International Airport (EGFF) – the Capital Airport for Wales. Gordon Bingham, Chief Operating Officer of Global Trek Aviation, commented, “we are delighted to be opening this all new facility at Cardiff International Airport as it offers tremendous potential with its ideal strategic location. Precision Aircraft Management Joins the ACSF, Enrolls in ASAP

 

Last week, the Air Charter Safety Foundation (ACSF) announced that the Denver-based Precision Aircraft Management joined the ACSF. The firm is yet one more aviation-based company that will participate in the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) created in cooperation between the ACSF and Federal Aviation Administration.


Along with more than 185 other member companies, Precision Aircraft Management (PAM) supports the ACSF’s vision to advance and enable the highest levels of safety in personal and business aviation through the promotion and facilitation of risk management programs.

The voluntary, self-reporting Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) helps identify and reduce possible flight safety concerns as well as mitigate risk. The ASAP uses employee input to identify significant safety concerns and issues, operational deficiencies, non-compliance with regulations, deviations from company policies and procedures, and unusual events. Each report is investigated, and corrective actions are determined based on a non-disciplinary approach to flight safety.
