NATA Provides Support for Events in Europe

Members of the NATA Executive Team were busy in Europe last week attending the Business Jets Fuel Green event in Farnborough and the annual European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) in Geneva. The activities kicked off at the TAG Farnborough airport where the global coalition of aviation associations and businesses gathered to promote the use of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel (SAJF), including a panel led by NATA COO Tim Obitts on the use of SAJF (the same panel discussion was also held a few days later at EBACE). Aircraft from major manufacturers, including Bombardier, Gulfstream, Cirrus, Embraer, Piaggio, Dassault, and Textron Aviation, flew through TAG and several other airports in the US and Europe to fuel up on SAJF on their way to EBACE. In all, 27 aircraft arrived at Geneva Airport (GVA) for EBACE, using 10,646 US gallons of alternative fuels. You can read more about this achievement here.

NATA also met with many of our members who attended EBACE, including Fargo Jet Center and Euro Jet. While at EBACE, NATA’s Managing Director of Safety and Training, Michael France, joined the annual IS-BAH Standards Board meeting to review public comments and proposed edits to the standard. IS-BAH, a joint Program between NATA and IBAC is the world’s only consensus standard for general and business aviation ground handling. Images and articles describing last week’s events can be found on our social media pages.

Third DEF Contamination Incident Highlights Need for Additional Training

Earlier this month, another jet fuel contamination event occurred at an FBO in Southwest Florida. This latest incident marks the third time in less than two years that Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) has contaminated the fuel supply of a jet fuel truck. In all three cases, multiple in-flight engine failures occurred, with the possibility of significant damage to aircraft fuel systems and engines. Fortunately, none of these cases resulted in an aircraft crash.

Following the first contamination incident in late 2017, NATA, through its Safety Committee, reviewed the risk of jet fuel contamination with DEF and created a free DEF Contamination Prevention training course. This most recent incident, however, highlights yet again, just how serious the DEF contamination risk is, and how it is still a very real threat. FBOs and aircraft operators must be diligent in ensuring that staff are not only properly trained, but that company policies and procedures used to prevent DEF contamination are being followed.

NATA Member, Euro Jet, Continues Growth with NATA Safety 1st Training

European and Asian ground handling provider Euro Jet is celebrated its continued growth last week at EBACE 2019, with the expectation of serving more than 10,000 flights in 2019 throughout its core region of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The company has been expanding over the past year and has plans for continued exponential growth moving forward. At its flagship location at the Prague Vaclav Havel International Airport, Euro Jet also became one of the first ground support providers in Eastern Europe and Central Asia to have its 72 handling personnel certified by NATA’s Safety 1st Professional Line Service Training course.

“Every year I have watched our flight volume increase significantly year-on-year throughout our core region and in other parts of the world," said Gareth Danker, director of the Prague-based company’s global sales and marketing. "The strong global economy continues to allow the private aviation industry to grow and we are feeling all the positive effects as the demand for superior customer service in both flight coordination and on-the-ground support continues to climb to an all-time high.”

Gulfstream Receives FAA Safety Certifications

Gulfstream has received FAA certification on its G650 and G650ER for steep approaches, the airframer announced last Monday at EBACE 2019. After successfully demonstrating its steep-approach capabilities last year, the type can now access challenging airports such as London City, which requires the additional certification due to its short runway and noise-abatement requirements. “This approval enables our G280 operators to land in more weather conditions, limiting delays or rerouting," explained Colin Miller, Gulfstream’s recently-named Senior Vice President of Innovation, Engineering, and Flight. “The Gulfstream EVFS significantly improves safety by increasing a pilot’s situational awareness at night and during low-visibility conditions.” Read more.

TAC Air is planning to open its 15th FBO in August in a more than $100 million redevelopment of the former Braniff Airlines Operations and Maintenance Base and Braniff International Airways headquarters. The maintenance hangars and offices have been undergoing a conversion to the Braniff Centre, whose tenants will also include Flexjet; Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’s company, Blue Star Land; and Reed Enterprises and its auto dealership Planet Lincoln, the latter two of which are converting a multi-level parking garage adjacent to the center into offices and an automobile dealership. Another feature of the center is 100,000 sq. ft. of space for uses that are expected to include restaurants, retail shops, and offices. “We really had to get thoughtful in the design of the center,” Greg Arnold, Chairman and CEO of The Arnold Companies, TAC Air’s parent.
