NATA and Industry Task Force Issued Report on Jet Fuel Contamination

Last week, NATA, in conjunction with an industry-led working group, released recommendations for aircraft operators, fixed-base operators, fuel suppliers, and other stakeholders to mitigate the possibility of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) contamination in jet fuel. DEF is a colorless liquid, injected directly into the catalytic convertor in diesel engine light- and heavy-duty vehicles to meet stringent EPA emission control standards. When mistakenly added to aircraft jet fuel, DEF crystalizes and clogs fuel systems leading to engine failure.

In three separate instances over the past three years at locations in the United States, including Nebraska and Florida, DEF has been mistaken for fuel system icing inhibitors (FSII), a clear liquid that is added to aircraft jet fuel.

“Safety is central to our mission at NATA. We are committed to working with our members and other industry stakeholders to eliminate the hazard of diesel exhaust fluid contamination of aircraft fuel. NATA encourages all of our members, including aircraft operators, FBOs, and fuel suppliers, to read this report and implement the recommendations as soon as practicable,” said NATA Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel Timothy Obitts.

Additionally, the FAA has made efforts to alert various stakeholders, issuing a Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) and two Special Airworthiness Information Bulletins (SAIBs) in 2018 and 2019, as well as a letter sent by the Office of Airport Safety and Standards to airports providing further background and recommendations.

NATA Attends International Aviation Safety Conference

Last week, VP Ryan Waguespack and COO Timothy Obitts attended the 2019 EASA-FAA International Aviation Safety Conference that was held in Cologne from June 12-14. The conference brought together senior aviation professionals from regulators, manufacturers, airlines, and associations from all world regions to discuss global aviation safety issues from the perspective of both the regulators and industry.

This year, under the theme “Regulators Innovating in the 21st Century,” the conference took a closer look at concrete ways for industry and regulators to address fast-paced innovation and emerging risks. The Conference program was structured around three focus areas: ‘The innovation challenge,’ ‘Expanding the regulator’s toolbox,’ and ‘Partnerships for the future.’

Setting the scene, plenary sessions on the first day looked into the regulators’ role in innovation and the challenges of technology. They were followed by a series of panel discussions and technical sessions on a wide range of topics, such as automated Flight Deck, Virtual Towers, Electrical Vertical Take-off and Landing Vehicles, Safety Management Systems, safety intelligence, interoperability of aircraft, certification synergies, and the new Annexes to the EU-US BASA.

Signature to Provide Skyport Infrastructure for Uber

Last week, Signature Flight Support was named the first nationwide operations and on-airport infrastructure partner for Uber Elevate, the companies announced at the Uber Elevate Summit. As such, Signature will facilitate ground-based operations and skyport infrastructure for Uber Air, as well as be the ground handler of choice for UberCopter services. Uber Air plans to operate a network of electric air taxis in cities worldwide to enable four-person shared flights in densely populated urban markets, initially in U.S. launch markets Dallas and Los Angeles in 2023. Until then, Signature will leverage its involvement in UberCopter, which begins next month in New York City via a partnership with HeliFlite, as a “building block” for Uber passenger handling that could then be scaled up for Uber Air, Signature Chief Commercial Officer Shawn Hall told AIN. For UberCopter, he said Signature will use its existing FBOs and also provide passenger-handling agents at the New York Heliports where HeliFlite operates. Read more.

Gulfstream Nears G600 Approval with Flight Testing Complete

Gulfstream Aerospace wrapped certification flying for its ultra-long-range G600 on May 22 and was in the final throes of the paperwork for U.S. FAA certification in the days leading up to the Paris Air Show, according to the Savannah, Georgia Manufacturer. “Both certification and entry into service are just around the corner,” Gulfstream President Mark Burns reported recently. “The rigor and discipline of our new G600 development program [are] unmatched.” By late last month, the G600 had amassed nearly 100,000 hours of flying in research and development labs and close to 3,200 hours in the air, he said, adding that the testing formula was used for the G500, proving to produce a mature aircraft. Gulfstream completed the G600’s flight-into-known-icing (FIKI) trials in March and followed with function and reliability (F&R) testing in May. The G600 flight-test program accrued close to 850 flights since the first aircraft flew on Dec. 17, 2016. Along the way, the 6,500-nm aircraft has accumulated 11 city-pair speed records. Winners of Van Nuys Airport Friendly Flyer Awards Honored

At an awards luncheon held at the Airtel Plaza Hotel last week, Van Nuys Airport (VNY) honored 36 general aviation companies with Friendly Flyer Awards. The awards honor the companies’ outstanding compliance with established noise abatement regulations and achieving 99 percent or greater compliance with all voluntary noise abatement programs at VNY during the 2018 calendar year. “We are very pleased that our Friendly Flyer program contributes to measurable noise reduction at and around Van Nuys Airport,” said Airport Manager Flora Margheritis. “We congratulate and thank each of our award recipients for their commitment to quiet flying practices, which reduce noise and enhance the quality of life in our neighboring communities.” The voluntary Fly Friendly/Quiet Departure Program for jet aircraft was first established in 1994 to address the community’s concerns regarding jet aircraft noise in neighboring areas. LAWA created the “Friendly Flyer” award in 2012 to acknowledge operators who complied with all noise abatement policies and procedures and had the highest level of success in adhering to the voluntary No Early Turn and Fly Friendly/Quiet Departure Programs.
