GAO Report Examines FBO Pricing

A new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure on pricing of aviation services found that FBO pricing depends on many variables. According to the results from interviews with industry stakeholders, the GAO found that an FBO's costs to build and maintain facilities such as hangars and fuel farms, as well as operating costs, seasonal demand, and competition, influence pricing.

The GAO developed a statistical model to analyze variation in fuel prices across airports in the contiguous U.S. in response to a request to examine FBO pricing and the FAA’s oversight of related airport grant assurances. Since 2007, the agency has doled out more than $37 billion in grants to airports to fund capital development and is responsible for ensuring compliance with requirements, including providing airport users equal access to airport services such as fueling.

The GAO statistical model confirmed a correlation between cost and demand factors and found higher prices at airports with higher cost and demand. While on-airport competition could result in lower prices at busy airports, the agency noted not all airports can support more than one FBO. According to the report, FBO pricing has not been identified as a widespread area of concern. Read more.

Chicago Executive Airport Launches QuieterHome® Program for Residential Sound Insulation

Chicago Executive Airport (CEA) has announced the launch of its comprehensive residential sound insulation program, known as QuieterHome®. This program provides sound insulating materials at no cost to eligible homes, and its launch continues CEA’s years-long efforts to reduce aircraft noise for local residences near the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration will provide 90% of QuieterHome funds, with the remaining 10% coming from CEA. “Our mission is not just to be the best general aviation airport in the country, it’s also to be a great neighbor to our surrounding community,” explained Jamie Abbott, CEA’s Executive Director. “Being able to provide sound mitigation materials directly into individual homes is a huge but worthwhile undertaking. Alongside our partners at the FAA, municipalities, and vendors, we’re up for the challenge.” Read more.

Bombardier Aviation Receives Inaugural Shipment of Sustainable Aviation Fuel in Montreal from Avfuel

Avfuel has provided Bombardier Aviation with an inaugural shipment of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to its Montreal facilities in support of the company’s long-standing commitment toward the environment. This step is the first in the Bombardier’s plan to secure long-term partnerships with fuel suppliers to deploy SAF to all of its facilities as worldwide supply becomes more readily available. “We stand behind our commitment to help promote the increased use of SAF throughout the industry,” said David Coleal, President, Bombardier Aviation. “Today, we are proud to offer it for the first time at one of our Canadian facilities and it’s only the beginning. Bombardier is working toward ensuring that the use of these fuels becomes a standard in our day-to-day operations as we do our part to reduce CO2 emissions worldwide and meet the longstanding industry climate pledge.”

This also aligns with Avfuel’s ongoing efforts to work with leading original equipment manufacturers on sustainability efforts. In total, Avfuel supplied 7,300 gallons (27,600 liters) of SAF to Bombardier to fuel its new customer aircraft deliveries. In total, the sustainable product provided a two metric ton reduction in life cycle CO2 emissions. “Working with leading OEMs, like Bombardier, is an opportunity for Avfuel and business aviation as a whole to meet sustainability goals,” said C.R. Sincock, executive vice president for Avfuel. “We are appreciative of the Bombardier team for its willingness to participate in this initiative, for its professionalism in working with Avfuel on the logistics, and for the work it’s doing on green initiatives.” Please click here for more information.
