NATA Participates with FAA and Industry on General Aviation Safety Roundtable

Last week, the Association’s COO and General Counsel Timothy Obitts, VP of Regulatory Affairs John McGraw, and Chairman of the Board Curt Castagna attended the FAA’s General Aviation Safety Roundtable. The Roundtable, held periodically with general aviation associations and the FAA, reviews the major safety issues of the day and what the next steps are towards ameliorating those problems.

Particularly important to NATA is the issue of illegal operations that represent themselves as legitimate Part 135 carriers. Obitts was quoted at the Roundtable as having said, “NATA, with the assistance of its Illegal Charter Task Force, continues to work with the FAA to quantify the scope of illegal operations and further enhance channels to collect actionable data, including the launch of an industry website containing an online reporting form and other informational resources on the dangers of these illicit operations. We thank the FAA for working with us on this important safety issue. Together, we are a force for protecting the lives and livelihoods of those who rely on 135.”

If you would like more information about NATA’s illegal operations initiative, please contact NATA Senior VP Ryan Waguespack at ryanw@nata.aeroRead more.

NATA and General Aviation Industry Leaders Committed to Safest Flying Season Ever

The Association, along with industry leaders from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), General Aviation Manufacturing Association (GAMA), Helicopter Association International (HAI), and National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) are committed to making this the safest general aviation flying season on record.

In a live ‘Holiday Flying Webinar’ held on Tuesday, Dec. 17, AOPA President and CEO Mark Baker and Air Safety Institute Executive Director Richard McSpadden will share tips to help pilots identify potential traps unique to the holidays that impact aviation decision making. McSpadden will explore shortfalls of the human decision-making process to help pilots identify elements that sometimes trick otherwise safe pilots into making bad decisions.

Leaders of each organization are asking GA pilots to tune in and discover practical ways to identify and mitigate red flags that can impact pilot decisions around the holidays.

Please use this link to join the live webinar on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

Pilot Rest and Duty Rules Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) Survey

You may be aware that NATA is participating in the FAA’s Part 135 Pilot Rest & Duty Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC). The ARC aims to incorporate the latest fatigue science into recommendations, but NATA also wants to ensure we understand how our recommendations may affect the current state of 135 operations. In support of the ARC, we are working to collect important insight for the committee into the type, size, and complexity of operations currently under Part 135. To help us gain a full picture of the 135 community, please fill out this short survey with just 11 multiple choice questions by January 20. Click here.

If you receive this survey from multiple associations, we ask that each operator only fill it out once. If you know of other 135 operators who may not receive this email, we ask that you please feel free to pass it along.

Back by popular demand, NATA's Ground Handling Safety Symposium (GHSS) will take place at the NTSB Training Center in Ashburn, VA in August 2020.

NATA Member Monday! | Circle Air Group

NATA’s Member Monday series highlights the diverse businesses that make up the Association's membership to show the positive impacts they have on their communities, the aviation business industry, and the world at large.

Children’s Flight of Hope (CFOH) provides air transportation for children to access specialized medical care. Since its founding in 1991, CFOH has grown to be an international organization, working with top children’s hospitals around the world from their headquarters in North Carolina. Without the service provided by CFOH, many families would be forced to postpone care, drive thousands of miles, or forego treatment altogether. CFOH is the only organization that offers the unique combination of commercial, purchased private charter, and corporate-donated private flights to ensure clients can access treatment despite certain medical, financial, or logistical constraints. CFOH allows families to focus on what is really important: the health and well-being of their child.

Rates are going to increase in 2020 for FedEx and UPS. NATA members need to stay informed of the changes in order to keep costs low. Here are the top takeaways to keep you in the know:

   -  FedEx and UPS small package rates are increasing an average of 4.9% - effective January 6, 2020 and December 29, 2019, respectively.

   -  Your actual costs will vary. Depending on the service you use and your package characteristics, you could see increases above or below the average.

   -  Many common surcharges are also increasing. On top of the base rates, you need to be aware of the charges that apply to your shipments and how they’ll affect your total costs.

PartnerShip®, the endorsed shipping provider for NATA, has sorted through the rate charts and put together a complete guide for members. Download the free white paper for key details about the new rates and how they may impact your business.

In exchange for the use of your facility, your company will be named a sponsor and will receive a complimentary registration where applicable.

Alternatively, paid sponsorship and exhibitor opportunities for NATA events start at $250. Sponsors and hosts also have the option of promoting their business with marketing flyers and/or giveaways.

Gulfstream Opens New MRO at Van Nuys Airport

Last week, Gulfstream Aerospace officially opened its second company-owned maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility in Southern California. The new service center at Van Nuys Airport (VNY) offers sizeable ramp space and access to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), the Savannah, Georgia-based airframer said. “Southern California, especially Los Angeles County, is a prime location for Gulfstream business jets, and with maintenance facilities in both Van Nuys and Long Beach, we have the resources to assist customers based in and transitioning through the area faster and more efficiently,” said Gulfstream Customer Support President Derek Zimmerman. “This expansion ensures our new aircraft, the Gulfstream G500 and G600, and the rest of our growing fleet continue to have the best service and support in business aviation.” Read more.

Thales, StandardAero Team on Light Helo Autopilot

StandardAero and Thales signed an agreement last week to jointly develop and certify an advanced autopilot system for several light helicopters, starting with the Airbus AS350. “As part of our ongoing Safecraft program, offering this modern compact autopilot allows us to press forward in our aggressive pursuit of certifying transformational safety technologies that address…pilot fatigue and entry into inadvertent IMC conditions that can often result in LOC-I and CFIT situations,” said StandardAero VP of Business Development for Airframes and Avionics Solutions Elvis Moni. “Until now, we haven’t had the right technology available for this segment to adequately address the threat head-on.” Read more.

Harrison to Chair NATA’s Airport Sponsored FBO Subcommittee

The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) has named Ben Harrison the chair of the newly-created Airport Sponsored FBO Subcommittee, which falls under the organization’s Airport Business Committee. It’s a role that Harrison says will put Cullman’s airport in closer touch with problem-solving ideas that other airports across the country may already be practicing, while sharing locally-created solutions with the wider aviation community. “More than anything, it gives us the ability to pick up the phone whenever there’s a problem here, and other professionals in the industry if they’ve dealt with that same problem before,” he explained. “It gives us the chance to see what we can learn from them — but also to see if they can learn anything from us. We’re all in the same boat — or, our business, I should probably say the same ‘plane’ — so it’s a great way to share our best practices and for everyone to learn from each other.” Read more.
