   This Week's Top Stories

Last week, NATA presented Safety 1st Clean – an infectious disease response cleaning standard for Fixed Base Operators (FBOs). The Safety 1st Clean standard is free to the public and produced by the NATA Safety Committee and COVID Task Force to provide general guidance on facility cleaning, disinfecting, and facility operations in response to a pandemic. The goal of this standard is to safeguard FBO team members, corporate assets, and the general flying public.

“The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world brought the entire aviation industry to a grinding halt in a way that many of us were unprepared for,” stated NATA Senior Vice President Ryan Waguespack. “As flight activities continue to increase, NATA felt it was critical to develop and provide Safety 1st Clean for free to the entire business aviation community to maintain safe and successful operations moving forward and to be better prepared for future outbreaks.”

The Safety 1st Clean standard also provides a self-certification process that allows FBOs to highlight their conformance to this standard by displaying the Safety 1st Clean logo. Upon completing the self-certification checklist (found in Appendix A), an FBO can send it and other required documentation outlined in the document to Safety1st@nata.aero to receive the Safety 1st Clean logo.

NATA Releases Fire Marshal Toolkit and Accidental Foam Discharge Checklist

Last Wednesday, NATA released the Fire Marshal Toolkit

and Accidental Foam Discharge Checklist as part of its Hangar Foam Fire Suppression System Initiative. An educational resource for Fire Marshals, FBO owners, and operators, the Toolkit provides vital information facilitating hangar design and construction conversations and highlighting research and frequency data on inadvertent hangar foam fire suppression system discharges.

This free online resource provides information on FBO operations and includes detailed information on factors impacting the decision to use foam fire suppression in hangars, including:

   -  Aviation fuels

   -  Types of foam

   -  Aircraft hangar fire protection regulations

   -  Possible environmental issues from foam

   -  Causes of unwanted foam discharges

   -  Insurance considerations

NATA would like to thank Fisher Engineering for its assistance in the development of the Toolkit and for those NATA members and nonmembers who graciously donated their expertise and financial support of the initiative.

The next Roundtable will be held on Wednesday, July 15th at 11:00AM EDT time.

NATA Senior Vice President Ryan Waguespack will be on the “Illicit Charter: Intentional or Not” webinar panel tomorrow at 1 p.m. EDT hosted by Aviation Week Network. He will be joined by Kent Jackson, Founder and Managing Partner of Jetlaw LLC; Don Riley, Operations Safety Inspector of FAA moderated by Fred George of Aviation Week Network.

Many expect post-pandemic interest in business aviation to increase as a result of reduced airline service and health concerns related to airline travel. While there are a number of options available to those new to business aviation–charter, jet cards, fractionals, among them–there are other ways to go aloft, such as paying an aircraft owner to try out the travel option with his aircraft and crew or a private pilot for a quick day trip to a business meeting. The problem is those latter options violate federal regulations risking fines and license suspension and void insurance coverage should an accident result.
