Court Blocks Department of Labor’s New Overtime Rule


Last Tuesday, a U.S. District Court granted a nationwide preliminary injunction to the Department of Labor’s overtime exemption rule scheduled to go into effect on December 1stNATA filed in opposition to the proposal last year noting it “will inhibit the promotion of employees to management positions and return some current managers to hourly status.” The rule states no employee with a guaranteed salary of less than $47,476 will qualify as exempt under the executive, administrative, or professional exemptions. The current minimum salary level is $23,660. The Department of Labor still has the option to appeal to the New Orleans, Louisiana-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

 


2017 Excise Tax Rates Announced

 

The IRS recently announced the 2017 rates for certain commercial transportation federal excise taxes and fees that are subject to annual inflationary adjustment. For transportation in calendar year 2017, the Domestic Segment Fee is $4.10, the International Facilities Fee increases to $18.00 per passenger and the fee for transportation beginning or ending in Alaska or Hawaii is $9.00 per passenger. The 7.5% tax on amounts paid for passenger transportation and the 6.25% rate for cargo are not indexed to inflation and remain unchanged. The new rates are explained on page 22 of IRS Revenue Procedure 2016-55.



NTSB Issues Safety Alert on Midair Avoidance


Following its investigation of two recent accidents, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued a Safety Alert on reducing midair collisions. The first fatal collision took place on July 7, 2015 when a Cessna 150 and a U.S. Air Force F-16 collided, causing two deaths. The second took place on August 16, 2015 when a North American Rockwell Sabreliner and a Cessna 172 collided, killing five people. Free Safety 1st FBO Status Map

 
The FBO Status Map is a web-based resource to assist aircraft operators in locating FBOs and ground handlers that are Safety 1st qualified and IS-BAH registered. NATA created the map to supplement the existing processes used by aircraft operators when selecting an FBO. The map is searchable by airport ID, company name, address and allows for additional details for each operation. Safety 1st participants can enhance their existing record on a yearly, per location, basis. The listing enhancement includes adding their website, logo contact information and more. Interested businesses can get started by emailing Safety1st@nata.aero.

Stevens Aviation and Atlantic Aviation Sign Letter of Intent to Build New Facility at Nashville

 
Last week Stevens Aviation and Atlantic Aviation signed a letter of intent to build a new MRO facility at the Nashville, TN airport (BNA). Facility plans include a 40,000-sq. ft. hangar that can accommodate the full line of Gulfstream, Challenger and Embraer Legacy airframes. Learn more.
