NATA Holds Successful Series of Air Charter and Industry Town Hall Meetings

Last week, NATA concluded a series of Air Charter and Industry Town Hall meetings with aviation businesses from the Pacific Northwest region at Global Aviation in Hillsboro, OR and King County International Airport in Seattle, WA. Discussions were led by Bill Deere, NATA Executive Vice President for Government and External Affairs, and covered a range of issues, including illegal charter, efforts to ensure the correct application of transportation excise taxes to aircraft management services, and FBO pricing. “By holding town halls across the country, we develop a better understanding of the needs and priorities of the entire aviation business community,” stated Deere in a press release.

Deere also briefed attendees on the status of the FAA authorization bill and asked them to remain committed to voicing their opposition to privatization of our nation’s air traffic control system. “The ATC privatization debate resumes in full force in September, making it imperative that aviation businesses continue to engage with their representatives using resources like NATA’s Legislative Action Center,” noted Deere.

To help NATA promote regional awareness of issues impacting your business, contact Karissa Uko at kuko@nata.aero or (202) 774-1513 to host a Town Hall Meeting.

NATA Voices ATC Privatization Concerns at Industry Events

On Monday, August 21st, Bill Deere, NATA’s Executive Vice President for Government and External Affairs, participated in the American Association of Airport Executives' (AAAE) General Aviation Issues and Security Conference at Van Nuys Airport in California. Deere appeared on a panel moderated by Jeff Kohlman of Aviation Management Consulting Group that included representatives from AAAE, AOPA, NASAO and NBAA. “The conference was an important opportunity to reach out to a key voice in the air traffic control privatization debate,” stated Deere. “General aviation airport managers and aviation businesses are the people lawmakers simply must hear from if we are to prevent the privatization of our nation’s air traffic control system. Airports and their businesses that service general aviation stand to lose the most from privatization of ATC, which will invariably shift the emphasis of aviation investment away from the national airspace to one focused more on airline route structures. It is important general aviation airports join NATA and over 130 general aviation groups in opposition to the bill,” Deere noted.

Deere will reiterate the importance of continued outreach to elected representatives in opposition to ATC privatization at the 4States Airport Conference in Kansas City, Missouri on Tuesday, August 29th. The 4States Airport Conference is comprised of all general aviation airports and businesses in the 4-state central region of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska and have joined together to keep apprised of aviation issues.

FAA Check Pilot InFO Encourages Company Check Pilots

FAA recently published FAA InFO 17012, “Regulatory Requirement to Provide Enough Flight Instructors and Check Pilots/Check Flight Engineers,“ guidance highlighting for operators the regulatory requirement to have check pilots. InFO 17012 explains that operators need to have adequate numbers of instructors and check pilots to support their operations (14 CFR 135.323) and not rely solely upon FAA resources.

NATA encourages operators to seek approval for check pilots. Should local FAA inspectors decline requests to approve qualified candidates, operators should discuss this InFO with their inspectors and elevate the issue.

ACI Jet SNA Earns New Hangar Deal Courtesy of Middle School Students

Two sixth graders, Gavin and Jake met during a middle school field trip to ACI Jet at John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, California. After discovering their shared interest of aviation, they later negotiated a deal to base a Dassault Falcon 900 at the FBO. Jake is the son of an ACI Jet manager and Gavin the grandson of John Dahlberg, the owner of the Falcon 900. “It quickly became very real when Gavin and Jake were granted the authority by their respective parents and grandparents to make the deal happen,” said ACI Jet President William Borgsmiller. “While a school field trip to an airport is anything but run-of-the-mill, Gavin and Jake took the opportunity to learn more about aviation and airports to heart,” former Orange County Supervisor Jim Silva said at the signing ceremony. “It’s inspiring and instructive, and it demonstrates what can come out of an education partnership between our schools and the aviation community.” Read more.
