Potential House Vote on ATC Privatization Announced for Early October | Tell Your Representative to Vote No

The controversial House FAA bill, containing the proposal to privatize our nation’s air traffic control system, continues to pose a grave threat to the nation’s general aviation pilots, airports and aviation businesses. Appearing at last week’s Commercial Aviation Summit, DJ Gribbin, Special Assistant to the President for Infrastructure Policy, told fellow ATC privatization supporters the House would consider the bill in early October. Also last week, NATA’s President, Martin Hiller, along with the leaders of the major general aviation associations, sent a letter to congressional leaders reiterating their opposition to ATC privatization and requesting at least a six-month FAA extension so as not to halt progress on NextGen modernization or delay critical airport infrastructure projects.

This is a critical time for general aviation and your voice is more important than ever if we are to prevent the privatization of our nation’s air traffic control system. Utilize the GA industry advocacy hotline, 833-GAVoice (833-428-6423), or visit NATA’s Legislative Action Center and tell your Representative to oppose ATC privatization.

Universal Weather and Aviation Continues Operations in Midst of Hurricane Harvey

During Hurricane Harvey, Houston-based Universal Weather and Aviation serviced its usual volume of 100 flights per day worldwide, offering trip support, flight planning and handling. The company implemented a business continuity plan — drafted after the 2008 Hurricane Ike — to ensure that customers experienced uninterrupted service. Universal's staff of 30 meteorologists closely followed the storm and the company began putting plans in place 10 days before Harvey made landfall in Texas. While Universal sent most of its 700 employees home before the storm, a dedicated crew equivalent to a typical night shift—50 to 60 people—remained in the third-floor operations center in a six-story building, near NASA's Johnson Space Center, to handle client needs. “We were able to keep our people safe and maintain global operations without affecting any of our customers,” stated Pete Lewis, SVP of Global Operations. “A lot of our customers didn't even know that we were in the middle of the hurricane. For us that is a source of great pride.”

Ten percent of Universal's employees lost homes and/or vehicles in the storm, Lewis said, adding that the company, employees and clients have all stepped up to help. Through the beginning of September, employees had raised $115,000 to assist coworkers. Universal has matched that figure and customers have made donations on the Universal employees' “You Caring” page to help. Read more.

EPIC Fuels and Other NATA Members Supporting Disaster Relief Efforts

As relief efforts continue in Texas and Florida, EPIC’s supply and dispatch teams are working tirelessly to ensure FBOs, government agencies and commercial airlines are supplied with fuel. In addition to the hurricane relief efforts, EPIC continues to dispatch aviation fuels to FBOs and bases supporting aerial firefighting operations in the Western United States. “We’re doing everything we can to ensure fuel is available for hurricane relief efforts, as well as the ongoing fire support missions in the West,” said Lee Jones, Vice President of Supply for EPIC Fuels.

Many of its partner FBOs are acting as distribution hubs for hurricane relief supplies as well as search and rescue operations. NATA member Cleburne Regional Municipal Airport, located an hour south of Fort Worth, Texas collected thousands of pounds of relief supplies and delivered water, food and clothing and other items into the affected area. EPIC has also ramped-up its operations to meet the aviation fuel demand for FBOs in the regions assisting with aerial firefighting operations including members: Redding Jet Center at Redding Airport (KRDD) in California; Edwards Jet Center (KBIL) in Billings, Montana; and Glacier Jet Center at Glacier Park International (KGPI) in Kalispell, Montana.
