AB 1889 Needs Your Support

AB 1889 NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

September 17, 2010

What’s at Issue
Rules issued by the California Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) threaten to harm California flight schools irreparably. Assembly Bill 1889 (AB 1889), which offers a delay in compliance to those rules for flight training, has been passed by the California Legislature and is now on Governor Schwarzenegger’s desk.

Why It’s Important
NATA has strong indications that Governor Schwarzenegger intends to veto AB 1889 due to language in the bill unrelated to flight training, and the association has already begun work on other strategies to achieve a delay in compliance for flight training. However, it is still important for the flight training community to show support for AB 1889 in the event that a last minute agreement is reached.

What to Do
NATA urges all California members and others concerned about the outcome of this issue to contact Governor Schwarzenegger immediately and express support of AB 1889. Letters to the governor should be addressed to:

The Honorable Arnold Schwarzenegger
Governor
State of California
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814

Your letter should describe your business, including how long you have been in business and the number of individuals you employ, and discuss the impacts the rules issued by the BPPE will have on your operation. Additionally, addressing the effects that these rules will have on the overall aviation industry and California economy is vital. Don’t forget to ask specifically that the governor sign AB 1889 into law.

NATA Position
NATA fully supports AB 1889 and believes that its passage and signing by Governor Schwarzenegger is the best means to ensure that California flight training facilities are not forced to close due to the rules issued by the BPPE. NATA stands ready to work closely with the legislature during the delay period to find workable long-term solutions to these issues

Status
AB 1889 is now on the governor’s desk and may be acted upon at any time.
