Major Announcement Regarding Filter Monitors

A major announcement is being made by Airlines for America (A4A) with the publication of Bulletin 2019.1-Updated ATA103 Requirements for Filter Monitors.

This latest bulletin states that when released, ATA 103 revision 2019.1 would allow the continued use of filter monitors qualified to EI 1583 7th edition beyond the December 31, 2020 withdrawal of the EI 1583 specification.

While this is welcome news to the many fuel providers who utilize filter monitor elements for into-plane refueling operations, the A4A bulletin was clear to emphasize that the decision was being made on a “INTERIM” basis only and “that filter monitors have no future in commercial aviation and will be phased out.”

As to exactly when filter monitors are to be phased out is yet to be determined and depends on the data collected from the current testing and evaluation of new filtration technologies.

Until then, A4A advises “It is imperative that into-plane fueling providers continue strict adherence to the A4A Bulletin 2017.2 actions and the filter monitor operational parameters prescribed in ATA103.”

NATA Webinars | Airport Tax Revenue Diversion, September 24 at 2PM EST

On Tuesday, September 24th at 2PM EST, join NATA’s Vice President of Government & Public Affairs, Jonathon Freye, in the Association’s “Airport Tax Revenue Diversion” webinar. At airports across the United States, revenue intended for airport use is being improperly diverted elsewhere. Since 1987, a federal law has required that tax revenues generated by the sale of aviation fuel be remitted to the airport for operational expenses and capital improvement, but over one hundred state and local tax jurisdictions around the country are not in compliance with federal law. That money could otherwise be used for airport construction projects that support aviation businesses. Register for the webinar today to learn the specifics of the issue and how you can take action.

Recap of Certified QC Inspector Workshop at Van Nuys, CA

Aviation fueling professionals from around the U.S. came together in Van Nuys, CA last week for NATA’s Certified QC Inspector Workshop. Attendees learned about contaminants that threaten aviation fuel quality, the risks they pose to the safety of flight, and the necessary quality control tests and inspections required to detect and prevent fuel contamination from occurring.

From fuel receipt to delivery at the wing-tip, the two-day workshop covered all aspects of aviation fuel quality control including documentation requirements and how to stay organized when managing a fuel QC program. Additional sessions included an introduction to Human Factors training, Misfueling and DEF contamination prevention, and a hands-on demonstration of various QC test methods.

Rick Spencer of Facet Filters was also on-site to provide an informative presentation on aviation fuel filtration and the current status of the filter monitor issue facing the aviation refueling industry.

NATA would like to thank Phillps 66, Facet Filters, and all the staff at Aeroplex/Aerolease for making this great event a success!

Additional dates and locations for the Certified QC Inspector Workshop and other NATA professional development events in 2020 are coming soon!
