Coyne Highlights Turnaround In Industry During Member Visits; Talks With Two Key Governors
NATA President James K. Coyne spent last week crossing the country and meeting with key state executives as well as a number of association members. Coyne first visited with Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and highlighted the importance of general aviation to his state and the many small businesses that support this segment of the aviation industry. Coyne then traveled to Wichita, KS, where he provided the keynote address for the Wichita Aeroclub luncheon on March 29th and discussed some of the indicators that he is seeing from around the country that an economic turnaround is now underway.

Coyne then met with Aircraft Electronics Association President Paula Derks in Independence, MO, to visit their new company headquarters. Coyne wrapped up his trip with visits to Lincoln, NE, and Cleveland, OH. In Lincoln, Coyne participated at a town hall meeting sponsored by Duncan Aviation, as well as meeting Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman. In Cleveland, OH, Coyne met with incoming NATA Chairman Jim Miller from Flight Options.

NATA Publishes Legislative Report On Health Care Reform Bill
On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed into law legislation to overhaul our nation’s health care system.  The U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives approved the measure, H.R. 3590, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. In addition, legislation was passed by the House and Senate, H.R. 4752, the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, which makes a number of health-related financing and revenue changes to H.R. 3590. Both bills seek to make purchasing health insurance coverage more affordable and to cover over 30 million uninsured Americans. The bills were signed into law by the President on March 26, 2010.

Washington State Tax Proposal On Aviation Rejected
NATA, along with general aviation (GA) industry groups including the National Business Aviation Association, reached out to members in the state of Washington last month about a bill being considered by the Washington State House of Representatives. The bill had intended to increase dramatically the annual tax on aircraft linked to the state. While that effort was defeated, a new House proposal had arisen that would institute an onerous tax based on a complicated chart of aircraft types and manufacture dates. Last week, the Washington State Senate rejected amendments to the House budget proposal that included the onerous tax on aircraft. The tax proposal would have increased the tax paid by aircraft owners on some newer and heavier GA aircraft in the state of Washington. 

Thanks to all who participated in contacting Washington state representatives in opposition to the state tax on aircraft.

Every three years, because NATA is a not-for-profit 501(c)(6) organization, we must obtain written approval from NATA’s member companies before soliciting contributions from those companies’ employees for NATAPAC. Completing and returning the form in no way requires you to make a contribution; however, signing the authorization form allows you to stay informed and contribute to NATAPAC. 

In the past, NATA has been successful in contributing to Members of Congress who have proven their leadership in supporting general aviation. NATAPAC will support the congressional campaigns of Members who support aviation businesses, regardless of party affiliation! With political fundraising and campaign activity at an all time high, we cannot afford to allow other interest groups to define the issues that will impact our members. Operators Encouraged To Complete Safety Survey
The Turbine Aircraft Operations Subgroup (TAOS), part of the FAA’s General Aviation Joint Steering Committee, was formed in 2005 to study and make practical recommendations to the FAA regarding safety practices for turbine aircraft operations. As part of that effort, TAOS has created a short on-line safety survey seeking input from pilots and operators about safety-related practices and programs.

Fact of the Week
Along with many other industry stakeholder groups, NATA participates in the General Aviation Awards Program. In each of the past 47 years, the General Aviation Awards program and the FAA have recognized a small group of aviation professionals in the fields of flight instruction, aviation maintenance, avionics, and safety for their contributions to aviation, education, and flight safety.

This awards program is a cooperative effort between the FAA and more than a dozen industry sponsors. The selection process begins with local FAA Safety Team managers at Flight Standards District Offices (FSDO) and then moves on to the eight regional FAA offices. Panels of aviation professionals from within those four fields then select national winners from the pool of regional winners.

This week, NATA is pleased to introduce Jeffrey Robert, 2010 National Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI) of the year.

Jeff is president of Fly Like the Pros ( in Los Angeles. He specializes in single-pilot jet operations, advanced avionics, advanced instrument instruction, and ground training software. A longtime Master CFI, he was an early member of the Cirrus Standardized Instructor Program (CSIP) as well as a co-creator and chief flight instructor of the Cessna Advanced Aircraft Club Recurrent Training Program for the Corvalis aircraft. Additionally, he serves as a FAASTeam representative.
